What the hell is Bloodfeast, anyway?

It's a Halloween party that raises money for the
New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists scholarship fund. We also use Bloodfeast to promote Red Cross blood drives.

Why's it called Bloodfeast?

1.) There is a blood connection: at our party we give out  information about upcoming Red Cross blood drives.

2.) ...But no, we did not make up the name.
The original
Blood Feast was a movie -- a horror/splatter/gore flick that Herschell Gordon Lewis produced back in 1963. It was one of the most bloodiest films ever made, and when it was released, many theaters refused to show it....which just made it more popular. John Waters has called Blood Feast "the Citizen Kane of gore films."

(Interestingly enough, Mr. Lewis earned his master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University!)

You've probably heard of Bloodfeast, even if you've never seen the original horror movie. Legendary punk band
The Misfits recorded a song called Bloodfeast, which was released on their1983 album Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood.

Flash forward about a decade later, to 1995...and NYC club promoter Michael Alig threw a party at the Limelight -- yup, he called it Bloodfeast. (Alig was later arrested on murder charges, and that whole story was brought to the silver screen with the movie "
Party Monster.")

In 2004, I decided to host a Halloween party that would support two good causes: 1.) Red Cross blood drives and 2.) the New England SPJ
journalism scholarship.  And so, in October 2004, we held Boston's inaugural Bloodfeast Halloween bash inside an old church in the South End. It then became an annual event.

What's this journalism scholarship about?

The New England chapter of the
Society of Professional Journalists established this scholarship fund in 2004. The chapter needs to raise $10,000 and then it can award scholarships to local college students on an annual basis. The scholarship fund is administered by SPJ's Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.

What's the party like?

Our Bloodfeast parties always draw a diverse crowd of media professionals, college students, reporters, photographers, authors, artists. To see photos from previous years, check out our
MySpace page.

The New England SPJ chapter will host its 8th annual Bloodfeast Halloween party in October 2011. There will be music, dancing, art, performances, and a Halloween costume contest with prizes. We'll also be giving out information about upcoming Red Cross blood drives, and, as always, proceeds from the door will be donated to the NESPJ scholarship fund.

Hope to see ya there.

Get your gore groove on and duke it out for a $1,000 cash prize for
the best costume, all while raising money for the scholarship fund of the New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists."
