What the hell is Bloodfeast, anyway? Basically, it's a Halloween party for a good cause. The proceeds are donated to the New England SPJ journalism scholarship fund. Why's it called Bloodfeast? 1.) There's the blood connection: at each party we give out information about upcoming Red Cross blood drives. 2.) ...But no, we did not make up the name. The original "Blood Feast" was a movie -- a horror/splatter/gore flick that Herschell Gordon Lewis produced back in 1963. It was one of the most bloodiest films ever made, and when it was released, many theaters refused to show it....which just made it more popular. (Smart man!) Interestingly enough, Mr. Lewis earned his master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He worked for TV and radio stations, and even taught college courses...before he got into the horror movie biz. You've probably heard of Bloodfeast, even if you've never seen the original horror movie. John Waters has called Blood Feast "the Citizen Kane of gore films." Legendary punk band The Misfits recorded a song called Bloodfeast, which was released on their1983 album Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood. Flash forward about a decade later, to 1995...and NYC club promoter Michael Alig threw a party at the Limelight -- yup, he called it Bloodfeast. (as you probably know, Alig was later arrested on murder charges, and that whole story was brought to the silver screen with the movie "Party Monster.") In 2004, we decided to throw a different kind of Bloodfeast party - a Halloween event that supported a good cause. Actually, two good causes! Our Bloodfeast parties 1.) promote Red Cross blood drives and 2.) raise money for the journalism scholarship. In October 2004, we held our inaugural Bloodfeast Halloween bash inside an old church in the South End of Boston. We've been throwing these parties every year since. What's this journalism scholarship about? The New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists established this scholarship fund in 2004. The chapter needs to raise $10,000 so it can award scholarships to local college students on an annual basis. The scholarship fund is administered by SPJ's Sigma Delta Chi Foundation. What's the party like? Our Bloodfeast parties always draw a really, really mixed crowd -- media professionals, college students, reporters, photographers, authors, artists.... Check out some of the photos from last year, and look at our MySpace profile. Bloodfeast 2007 will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27th, at Machine nightclub (1254 Boylston St., Boston, MA). Proceeds from the cover charge will be donated to the scholarship fund. 123 Party is going to be there, and Machine is giving away $1,000 cash to the wearer of the best Halloween costume. Hope to see ya there. Emily Sweeney New England SPJ chapter president |
